Rosca de Reyes for El Día de Los Reyes

El Día de Los Reyes is celebrated in Mexico and Guatemala too. It has Catholic roots, but some evangelicals celebrate, as well. It celebrates the Wise Men coming after the birth of Jesus.

We got together on the Eve of El Dia de Los Reyes and our friend Andrea brought a cake. The taste and look both remind me of German stollen that we have Christmas week. Each child got to cut one slice from youngest to oldest, hoping their piece would have one of the two tiny figurines of baby Jesus.

The little boy has a knife to cut his piece.

My piece of the Rosca de Reyes (a sweet bread in a ring with a decorated top) had the baby Jesus! Per the tradition my friend grew up with, it is my "responsibility" to host another party in the beginning of February. I love to have people over to my house, so it will be my pleasure to have these two families over again.

Andrea said that they would put their shoes under the tree on the Eve, so that the "wise men" would fill them with candies overnight.

Any excuse for more candy, right?

=) Carrie
